It depends on how much I have to do, how tired I am, and if I want to go to the gym! I usually do either 9-4 or 9-5 but sometimes I sneak off at 3:30! I think this will stop as I go further into my PhD though!
Officially I work 8 hours a day. However, I often think about things and read scientific papers outside of work. If a deadline is coming up, I sometimes have to work longer.
A lot of scientists work too long, because they love their jobs, and also because there is a lot of competition.
When I’m working form the office its a 7.5 hour day from 0900 to 1730, but I have a work smartphone and can log into my work computer from home, so if I see something ping through while I#m watching gogglebox I can send off a reply!
When I’m working offshore on a survey boat I tend to take up the shift pattern being worked on the vessel, something like 12hrs on, 12hrs off depending on what work the boat is doing and what I need to achieve. That can be quite hectic!
