When the sun emits charged particles during a solar flare some of them get through the earth’s magnetic field and then bump into atoms and molecules that are in the atmosphere. When they collide you get little bursts of light called photos and these make the dancing lights that you see on the northern lights (borealis), they also have southern lights too (australis)
