      I think it is hard to say. People have always asked questions about nature and tried some experiments. In early civilizations these people might have been priests like in ancient Egypt. The priests had the knowledge to build the Pyramids, at the same time they believed that gods and goddesses controlled things that we know are just natural today, like the weather for example.

      A person who was very important for modern science was Galileo. He insisted that knowledge be tested by experiments, which got him into trouble with the church. Eventually Galileo’s way of thinking won and now most people believe in knowledge tested by experiments before they believe in stories.
